Carus Corporation Appoints New Board Member

14 April 2008

LaSalle/Peru, IL – Carus Corporation is pleased to announce the appointment of William W. Shropshire to its Board of Directors. During a long and successful career in the chemical and metals industries, Bill heads up American Chemet as its CEO.   With his professional experience, Shropshire is intimately familiar with the wealth of challenges and opportunities that face a mid-sized chemical manufacturer such as Carus.

Shropshire began his career in 1961 at CVRD Inco, formerly International Nickel. He first worked in its rolling mill in West Virginia and progressed into sales before becoming Inco’s Manager of Ventures Development where he was responsible for mine start-up evaluations on properties in the U.S., Brazil, South America, and Australia. In 1976, Shropshire joined a small copper and zinc-based chemical company, American Chemet Corporation, as president and CEO. During his tenure, sales of the company grew dramatically, from $10 million to $236 million. In 1982, he participated in the organization of Peninsula Copper Industries (PCI), a second metallurgical company, whose sales are now approaching $90 million. He also is active as a member of the Boards of Directors of PCI and American Chemet as well as Magneco/Metrel, a producer of refractory materials for the iron, steel, glass, and non ferrous industries. He serves as Chairman of PCI’s Board and was Chairman of the Board of Directors of Columbia Paint Company before its acquisition by Sherwin Williams. Bill has a Bachelor of Science degree in Metallurgical Engineering from Purdue University and an MBA from the University of Chicago.   He resides in Evanston, IL with his wife Harlan.

Shropshire is also an active volunteer in various educational initiatives, a major commitment that Carus shares, since Carus has made extensive educational outreach and commitments to the community in Illinois where it is based. Shropshire is active on the advisory committees of the Engineering Department of Carroll College in Helena, MT, and the Materials Engineering Program at Purdue, as well as a Materials Engineering Program Visitor for the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Shropshire is also a veteran of the U.S. Army.

In his new role as a member of Carus’ board, Shropshire will join other board members in an oversight role for general management of the Company. In that capacity, he will help provide new ideas for strategic direction, oversee implementation of plans, and monitor performance.

Carus Corporation, founded in LaSalle, IL, in 1915, is a world leader in permanganates, phosphates, and base metal catalysts, all of which Carus manufactures primarily for environmental applications: to improve the quality of drinking water, to treat municipal and industrial wastewater, in air purification systems, and in the clean up of contaminated sites.
