Wastewater

Carus has a long history of oxidation of hydrogen sulfide in wastewater applications. CAIROX® and AQUOX® potassium permanganates, CARUSOL® liquid permanganate, ECONOX® liquid permanganate and CAIROX® CR extruded potassium permanganate are effective oxidants used widely in wastewater applications to eradicate odors and control corrosion caused by sulfides. TOTALOX™ odor eliminator is a specially blended formulation that provides immediate odor control and is also a nutrient source for long-term odor control in wastewater collection systems.  Applications include hydrogen sulfide removal, elimination of mercaptan odor, amines and organic nitrogen and sulfur based compounds.

Carus permanganate products are successful in the following wastewater applications:

Bio-solids/sludge dewatering: In the treatment of sanitary sewage, bio-solids are separated from the liquid. These bio-solids are concentrated and dewatered using filter presses, centrifuges, or other devices. Hydrogen sulfide and mercaptans are released during the dewatering operation.  Carus permanganates react quickly and produce immediate results for hydrogen sulfide removal in order to provide a safe, odor free environment and minimize corrosion due to sulfides.

Collection systems: With miles of pipe and multiple pumping stations, managing the complexity of a wastewater collection system is a full time job. The main task is to keep the system flowing and prevent any nuisance odors that can result in consumer complaints. Carus offers a range of permanganate products for both immediate and long-term odor control in force mains, lift stations and wet-wells.

Leachate: Water percolating through landfills produces leachate, that may contain undesirable or toxic chemicals. The bottom of the landfill is lined with impermeable layers and leachate is collected and treated before being sent to a wastewater treatment plant via hard pipe or truck hauling. Odors from leachate can be particularly offensive and can off-gas dangers levels of odorous compounds.

Ponds & lagoons: Wastewater lagoons are utilized to collect and stabilize wastewater. Approximately one third of all U.S. secondary waste treatment facilities employ some type of pond system. Lagoons can become septic, or contain compounds that product significant odors.

Grease removal: Whether a collection system is handling domestic, commercial, or industrial waste; grease accumulation causes problems in wet wells, lift stations and pipelines. Problems with grease include interference with wet well level controls, reduced wet well capacity, plugging of pipes and pumps, and unsafe working conditions.
