Oxidation

Carus permanganates have been used in private and public drinking water applications for more than 40 years. Municipal drinking water plants use CAIROX® and AQUOX® potassium permanganates, and CARUSOL® liquid permanganate in both ground water (well) and surface water for Pretreatment, Pre-oxidation and Organics Removal. Today, municipal water providers face increased challenges as more stringent regulations are enacted and public awareness regarding water quality becomes heightened. Applications where Carus permanganates are proven effective include:

Disinfection by-products (THM & HAA):
Delaying the chlorination point to post-coagulation provides major THM reduction. However, if moving chlorination does not achieve compliance, using Carus permanganates as a pre-oxidant has been shown to reduce disinfection by-products by as much as 40%.

Taste and odor:
FISHY, GRASSY, SEPTIC, PHENOLIC, SULPHUR, AND CUCUMBER odors are easily controlled by Carus’ permanganates.

Iron and manganese:
Thousands of groundwater treatment plants use Carus’ permanganates to reduce iron and manganese below the secondary standards.

Color removal:
Decayed vegetation and minerals cause the majority of raw water color. Anaerobic conditions in raw water reservoirs cause leaching of the bottom sediments that contain many of these contaminants. Carus’ permanganates are effective in treating colored waters.

Radium removal:
Carus’ permanganates are used in combination with manganese sulfate to produce freshly precipitated hydrous manganese oxides (HMO’s) for adsorption of radium.

Arsenic removal:
Carus’ permanganates are used to remove arsenic in ground water treatment systems and surface water plants that employ filtration.
