Carus Corporation is the world's largest manufacturer of potassium permanganate.
The company was founded in 1915 by Dr. Edward Hegeler Carus, who first
performed experiments with the chemical while an undergraduate at the
University of Wisconsin. When World War I in Europe threatened foreign
supplies of potassium permanganate to the United States, Edward Carus
saw an opportunity and he began production in barns located on the site
of what is now Carus Chemical's LaSalle manufacturing facility.
During its more than 85-year
history, Carus's ongoing emphasis on research and development, technical
support, and customer service, has enabled the company to become the
world leader in permanganate, manganese, chemical oxidation, and catalyst
technologies.
A strategy of expansion was adopted in the 1990's when Carus acquired
Technical Products Corporation (TPC) in 1997 and The Kjell Corporation
in 1998. As a result of these two acquisitions, Carus became the
leading U.S. supplier of corrosion control products for drinking water
utilities. In 2000, Carus acquired the permanganate business of
Industrial Quimíca del Nalón (IQN) of Oviedo, Spain. This acquisition
represents Carus' commitment to develop the potassium permanganate
market in Europe, and is an important step to help expand the European
market for potassium permanganate.
Carus also provides custom manufacturing services which take advantage
of the company's technical, production, and oxidation expertise. Custom
manufacturing at Carus is a "green" oxidation technology which allows
for recycling of co-product materials.
Today, Carus Corporation manufactures a wide range of products for
municipal, industrial, and environmental markets (i.e. water treatment
and air purification) -- with the majority used in environmental
applications. Products include CAIROX® and AQUOX® potassium permanganate, LIQUOX® sodium permanganate, CARULITE® catalysts,
and a complete line of corrosion control products including AQUA MAG®, TPC®, and
